Ensign began in Sydney in 1934 as a specialist tie manufacturer. More than nine decades later, the business remains Australian owned and family operated, supplying customised neckwear, accessories and uniform products to organisations across Australia.
The beginning, 1934
The story of Ensign began when Henry and Cecil Green established Green & Co in small premises within the Grace Building on York Street. Their early focus was singular: the meticulous manufacture of specialist neckwear for a growing Sydney market. This foundation in quality craftsmanship and attention to detail within one of Australia's most iconic architectural landmarks set the standard for the generations to follow.
War, materials and innovation
The onset of World War II brought immediate challenges to the textile industry, with material restrictions forcing a pivot in manufacturing focus. Ensign adapted by sourcing alternative fabrics and refining its techniques, ensuring the continuity of production through lean times. This period of necessity became a catalyst for growth, leading to post-war expansion as global trade reopened. In a landmark moment for the local industry, Ensign became the first manufacturer in Australia to produce a polyester tie using the innovative Terylene fabric, setting a new standard for quality and durability in Australian neckwear.

The company's manufacturing excellence led to producing under licence for prestigious international houses, including Christian Dior, Missoni, and Paco Rabanne, cementing its reputation for quality.
